Incarnations was a very informative and interesting look at 50 people who influenced India’s history, particularly the lesser knowns, although there are a couple of mainstream figures as well. It was intriguing to see how the author ties the events of the past to the ripples it caused in the present with the contemporary Indian nation, particularly where national Hinduism is concerned. My biggest wish was more emphasis on female figures and Muslim figures who had an impact on modern India. I also would’ve appreciated more commentary on the anti-feminist rhetoric posed by the vast majority of these people. Lastly, more personal analyses and subjective viewpoints by the author on the topics would also have made it feel more personal rather than laced with the stoicism found in a typical textbook-style presentation. This is one of those sci-fi serials that wasn’t as popular when I bought them, however, it’s gathered quite a mighty following over the years. I love adult sci-fi and I do want to read this one day. If you’re in the market for a manga series that is SO marvellously inclusive of LGBTQIA+ characters with gay/lesbian, bisexual, asexual, aromantic, non-binary representation (and more) without following harmful narrative tropes or fetishising those identities, then you must read Devils’ Line by Ryo Hanada. It’s one of my top ten fave seinen manga because of its characters and how even the most minor individuals have a radiant level of depth to them. Also, the entire story is an allegory of society falling into uncivilised mob-mentalities when it comes to things they are either too ignorant about or feel uncomfortable with (such as LGBTQIA+ people or POC, for examples). The anime was a hot mess of crap that did not do the series justice at all, so I’ll never recommend it. But the manga is so well-written and I just can’t get enough of it. Aside from its rep, it’s an adult crime dark fantasy manga about Devils or vampires who are trying to coexist with humans. The vampires also don’t follow typical moulds. For example, they have limited lifespans and can procreate with humans creating biracial offspring. This is my FAVOURITE book EVER!!! It’s central theme is the Buddhist belief in impermanence (among others). It is equal parts breathtaking, deeply thought-provoking, comforting, and utterly heartbreaking. I’ve never read a book filled with such intense evocative elements before, including being humble in the face of great and terrible adversity.
