Fantasy First-Liners #1: The Name of the Wind & The Never King

Welcome to Fantasy First-Liners! In an effort to keep things cool and easy this summer, I decided to create this short, simple, and fun series for the season where every Monday I will take a stack of three to four fantasy books and share their first few lines with you!

Due to my health, I tend to become very sick and quite easily prone to getting heat strokes and headaches during the boiling summer time. My ultimate hope for Fantasy First-Liners is to allow myself a bit of reprieve in the mornings from the more intricate facets of blogging, such as reviewing, and to just focus on a bit of silly, easy, fun. I think it will also create a positive kick-off to the week ahead, and allows me to take my time waking up a bit.

All of the books that I will be sharing for Fantasy First-Liners will be books that I physically own copies of, and as such, are the ones that tend to be my priority when it comes to deciding what to read next. Over the past few years, I have learned that some of the best lines in a book tend to be the opening ones. This doesn’t always ring true, but more so with science-fiction and fantasy than any other genre (so far!).

Anyhoo, with the intro done, I hope you enjoy this seasonal segment! ♥

The Lord of Snow and Shadows by Sarah Ash

“The Clan Lord lies dying, his eyes wandering, glazing over as he reaches out blindly to grasp his lieutenant’s arms.”

Well… that’s a gloomy one, ain’t it?

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

“It was night again. The Waystone Inn lay in silence, and it was a silence of three parts.”

Ah, ambiguity. I like it.

The Never King by James Abbott

“Dress like an animal. Act like an animal. By the thunder of the Goddess, Jorund thought, even talk like an animal. Barbarism to combat barbarism.”

Broody with a dash of bleak doom. Excellent.

I must say, all of those sound pretty damn interesting to me. Hmmm… this series may come back to bite me in the ass, now that I’m thinking about it. Oh well. #NoRegrets.

Thanks for paying me a visit! May your Monday be joyful, and your week filled with laughter. Until next time, happy reading and happy otakuing. 🌴
