Today I wanted to briefly chat about popular shōnen characters that I really don’t like. I have been hesitant in sharing this list because I didn’t want to get bombarded with hate, but then I realised that these are just my own, personal opinions and in no way, shape, or form reflect the masses. I should be able to openly talk about whatever I’d like on my personal space. So… viola, here we are.
I will confess that most of my reasons for not liking these characters are closer to being silly and superficial rather than something grand and intelligent. But then again my reasons for loving some of the people that I do are also quite similar. For example, my initial reason for loving Sesshomaru is because he is a super handsome badass warrior dude. His long, lustrous hair and aloof persona make me weak at the knees. So why can’t I loathe characters for the same reasons? Good logic, right? No? Sorta? Eh, we’ll run with it. Check out my most disliked shōnen dudes and bros down below!
05. Leorio Paladiknight
I don’t actually hate Leorio, by far. I just find him to be mildly annoying and slightly displaced in the series, Hunter x Hunter, when compared to the rest of the cast. I think my biggest peeve when it comes to Leorio is how obnoxiously narrow-minded he can be. He’s also loud and yells and freaks out way too easily. But underneath it all, he’s got one hell of a compassionate heart, so because of that I will never truly hate him or loathe him. That’s why he’s the low guy on the list.
04. Seijūrō Akashi
I know two friends who shall immediately recognise this guy from Kuroko’s Basketball. Akashi fucking creeps me out! Also, he can be unbelievably infuriating with his superiority complex. Normally, I love characters that encapsulate the essence of assholery, but this guy? Hell no. I want to take the basketballs and hit him in the shin with it more often than not. Or in the arse. That could work too.
03. Son Gohan
I know… he’s the most powerful Saiyan in Dragon Ball Z, blah blah blah. BUT HE’S THE GODDAMN SAIYAMAN!!! Are you fricking kidding me? The Saiyaman makes me want to bang my head against the wall… I also find it hilarious that Gohan is a bit of a pacifist, however, whenever he’s forced to fight, usually to protect his loved ones, his ego gets bigger than the entire universe. It can give the Prince of Saiyans a run for his money!
02. Monkey D. Luffy
Okay… now we’re getting into the controversial part of the post. Luffy from One Piece freaks me out with his stretchiness! I don’t know why. I have tried to decipher why the stretchiness specifically makes my skin crawl. The reason still eludes me. It just does. Whenever I see him stretch his arm back or other parts of his body into odd shapes, I can feel my own skin get weird chills and the heebie-jeebies.
01. Naruto Uzumaki
He is one of the most annoying characters ever. Now… I would like to say that I never finished reading the Naruto manga series (I’ve never seen the anime), so there is a chance that I will like Naruto as an adult versus a kid and a teenager. I am very open-minded to that possibility because, hey, kids grow up and become less irritating. But as it stands, I can’t stand this dude. He is so loud and obnoxious and rambunctiously energetic. Also, his incessant need to compete with everyone, specifically Sasuke Uchiha over some dumbass girl, drives me baddy. I totally understand the inferiority complexes that drive him, and to be frank, I appreciate the part it plays in the narrative and his growth as an individual. Nonetheless, it’s exasperating as all hell.
Who are some popular shōnen characters that you don’t particularly care for? Is there anyone on this list that you feel is redeemable? I love to learn why people like the characters they do! So, please chat with me down below.
Lol! I love Naruto because I found him hilarious. There is a kind of similar character in Final Space (not anime but a great show). I have a completely different personality but I find these guys funny. =)

Naruto can be funny, I will admit that much. The English versions of the manga actually censor quite a bit of his humour, which can be a downer. 😦

Okay, I was never a fan of the Monkey D. Luffy guy and One Piece just didn’t make sense to me (didn’t get past the first episode or two), but Naruto? I love him. I watched the anime first and totally loved him as the hero (I dunno how he comes off in the manga in the beginning). Ironically, however, in the entire Naruto series, I feel like Naruto is the one with the least growth. I haven’t completed the manga but was pretty far in, and don’t recall any significant growth aside from his physical capabilities. I think I enjoyed Naruto more for the other characters, since Naruto was never actually my favourite. He’s too hyper most of the time and I don’t recall him ever being emotionally serious, which is kinda annoying.

I felt that way about him in the manga for the longest time, that Naruto didn’t get nearly as much growth as the other characters. His story is actually really straight forward, maybe that’s another reason I didn’t like him. He’s too cliche. The other characters are definitely the best part of that series.

Normally I like the side characters more. They main characters always cry too much.

Lol, this is very true!! I tend to love the other characters more than the main ones.

Awesome list! The only character in DBZ more annoying then Saiyaman is Mr. Satan!

I’m with you on Naruto and Luffy (that’s why I never got into either series – I just couldn’t bring myself to care what happened to either character).

Yeah, I could never get into One Piece because Luffy just freaked me out, lol. I do like the Naruto manga, I as many people have stated, the other characters are the best part of the series and that’s why I enjoy it so much.

LMAO, not surprised by any of these to be honest. Although I do feel you will grow to like Naruto in his late teen years and as an adult. It does shock me a tiny itty bit because you and naruto had a lot of similar challenges growing up. 😉

Yeah, I suppose you’re right. I never really thought about that before. You suck, haha. For making me realise that lmao.

I don’t know if he’s considered popular, but he does seem to have a lot of supporters: Black Star from Soul Eater. He was so annoying.

Oh yeah, he does seem to have a lot of people that like him. I started Soul Eater once, but never got around to finishing it yet. I had a hard time getting into the beginning because I couldn’t connect to most of the characters.

Asta in Black Clover. I want to take a brick and beat him into unconsciousness. It’s all the screaming. I can’t take it. He is why ball gags were made. He actually drove me away from the show even though I was intrigued with the story, and since I had never really watched the other shows it was being compared to, I thought I might bring a fresh eye to it, so to speak. But yeah, about three episodes in I simply couldn’t take it any more.

Yes!!! Omg, I feel the same way. I tried to watch the series, but I gave up about five episodes in because Asta was driving me sooo batty.

I feel like I’m actually in the minority of people saying that I like the great saiyaman character. I dig that whole world tourney/high school arc, actually.
Most people think his character went off the rails after the cell ark, but he’s been a bit of a dork, which I approve of.

I don’t mind the dorkiness. I actually tend to adore that trait, but there’s just something about him that makes me wanna bang my head against the wall lol. Although, I can’t imagine anyone else being the great saiyaman except for Gohan.

Naruto, Luffy, AND Leorio?! Actually, I do understand your reasons, but I still love these characters, especially Leorio. Out of curiosity, are you basing your impression of him on the manga, the 1999 anime, or the 2011 anime? I feel that he is portrayed slightly differently in each.

Leorio only mildly irritates me. He doesn’t drive me all batty like the other ones. Luffy doesn’t irritate me as much as he just creeps me out, lol. I’ve based my opinion on the 2011 anime. I do want to read the manga one day though.

I don’t like Komatsu from Toriko. He was just too annoying, lol
