Top 5 Long-Haired Anime People I’d Love to Cosplay

Cosplay is one of the aspects of otaku culture that I haven’t had an opportunity to participate in yet, but it’s one that I admire quite a bit. Being able to see entire fandoms coming together to celebrate their beloved heroes, villains, and everything in between by dressing as them, or creatively putting unique spins on the original in a myriad of ways is plenty exciting to me. However, I’ve always been too afraid to cosplay myself. The reasons vary from insecurities to not having the finances for it to being a terrible seamstress and a couple of others. Nonetheless, I still have my trusty list of characters that (maybe) one day I hope to bring to life in my very own ways and interpretations.

Being a human with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), I have my cosplay list roughly categorised into different sections. Since I have been diligently growing my hair out for the past two to three years, and it’s finally reached the first length that I’ve been trying to get it out to (approximately 42 inches), I thought it’d be fun to celebrate by sharing five anime characters who have long hair, all of whom I’ve always wanted to cosplay partly because of these individuals’ lengthy locks.

There is one person on the list who is from a much newer anime series than the others. When I encountered them during my watch through of their respective series, I fell magically in love with them and immediately had to toss them onto the list. The more of the anime I watched, the more I realised just how much I would adore to cosplay them in the future. You can check them out, along with the rest down below!

05. Orochimaru (Naruto)

Orochimaru is one of the earlier villains from the shōnen series, Naruto. He was the first villain from the series that I thought was super interesting (although he’s not my favourite one, that’s someone else and another long-haired person I want to cosplay one day). Of course, the first thing I ever noticed about him was his long hair, but also thought it’d be a lot of fun to do the eyeliner make-up that gives Orochimaru his distinctly serpentine appearance. It was very different than other anime make-up styles, so to speak, and that really called out to me.

04. Illumi Zoldyck (Hunter x Hunter)

Illumi is a morally grey character from the shōnen series, Hunter x Hunter. Honestly, he creeped me the fuck out the first time I saw him (I watched the 2011 adaptation first, but hope to see the 1999 someday), yet the more that I saw him interact with Hisoka, and the more that I saw of his colourfully unique attires, I became quite fascinated by him. I looked up his outfits from the original anime adaptation and I thought those were really cool too. If I could sew, I believe most of the fun of cosplaying as Illumi would stem from creating the costumes myself.

03. Cornelia Li Britannia (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion)

Cornelia is a character from Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion that I didn’t care for initially, but after some horribly tragic events in the series, watching the changes that she underwent, I came to empathise with and even sympathise for her at certain points. Regardless of my mixed feelings of her as a character, I fucking love her royal uniforms. Not only are most of then gender neutral, they just look so neat. I’m obsessed with suits, particularly three-piece ones, and most of her uniforms reminded me of my favourite styles of suits. Cravats notwithstanding, another appeal for cosplaying as Cornelia would be the excuse to dye my hair beautifully pink!

02. Prince Sōma Asman Kadar (Black Butler)

Prince Sōma Asman Kadar is a minor character in Black Butler. He annoyed the heck out of me most of the time, but he was one of the first characters I ever saw in anime that was a brown-skinned Bengali person, and it made me feel so fucking excited as a fellow Indian human! From then I have wanted to cosplay as him because his representation is one that helped me to feel validated in some small ways as a diverse otaku individual. Couple that with the purple hair (which admittedly isn’t that long) and the fancy, stylish Indian clothing and sweeping scarves, I was infatuated.

01. Kohaku a.k.a. Huehuecóyotl (Midnight Occult Civil Servants)

Kohaku is an Another, or a supernatural being, from Midnight Occult Civil Servants and I fricking love this dweeb. He’s the Aztec god of mischief and he is one of the most stylish anime characters that I have ever encountered. His style is also marvellously genderfluid and can fit an array of occasions or seasons. Couple that with his gorgeously long hair—which I would need to grow my own out a bit more in order to match his length—and the charming personality that Kohaku has going on (albeit quite bratty at times), he became my number one long-haired person to cosplay hella fucking fast!

Have you ever thought about cosplaying before, or are you a cosplayer? Who are some long-haired characters that you have wanted to, or have cosplayed before?

  1. I’ve always admired long hair on anime characters. Not just the long hair but also the vibrant colors! 🌈✨

I wish my hair would grow long, but it hasn’t grown at all in several years 😭It’s been the same shoulder length as long as I can remember. Idk what I’m doing wrong but it’s really frustrating…. and I rather not resort to a wig or something, even though cosplay is very appealing.

    • I love the vibrant colours too! I think they’re really neat.

I cut my hair really short a few years ago and then regretted it a couple of weeks later. It took a lot of care and patience to grow my hair back out. While it can be a pain sometimes, I don’t think I’d ever cut it that short again.
